In contrast to conventional particle-filled columns, the Chromolith® HPLC columns from Merck Millipore are based on high-tech, monolithic silica gel-based technology. Chromolith® rod columns are produced from a single piece of porous silica gel using a sol-gel process and have a defined bimodal pore structure with macro- and mesopores in the micro- or nanometer range. The high permeability and porosity of the silica gel skeleton and the resulting low backpressure allow for more flexible flow rates than particle columns.
