Gel permeation chromatography is one of the most powerful and versatile analytical techniques available for understanding and predicting polymer performance. It is the most convenient technique for characterizing the complete molecular weight distribution of a polymer. GPC/SEC can be performed in a wide range of solvents, from non-polar organics to aqueous applications. The columns are packed with very small, round, porous particles to separate molecules contained in the solvent that is passed through them. GPC/SEC separates molecules on the basis of their size, that is why it is called ‘size exclusion’. The first GPC/SEC columns were packed with materials referred to as gels (‘gel permeation’).
