Deuterium lamps for HPLC detectors are gas discharge lamps in which a small amount of deuterium is lit up by electrons. The emitted UV spectrum of deuterium lamps starts from the UV wavelength range (185-400 nm) to the visible spectral range (400-800 nm). The lamp body itself is made of synthetic quartz as normal glass hardly allows UV radiation to pass through. The quartz also absorbs radiation below 170 nm. To ignite the deuterium lamp, it is first heated with a low DC voltage, easily recognisable by an orange glow. The actual ignition is then initiated with a high-voltage pulse. Electrons are emitted from the filament, which now absorb so much energy as they pass through the electric field, at the same time ionizing other gas molecules and thus releasing more electrons.
