For the generation of an anaerobic atmosphere in the cultivation of anaerobes. With the OXOID AnaeroGen, anaerobic conditions for the cultivation of fastidious anaerobes can be achieved quickly and reliably. The AnaeroGen bag rapidly absorbs the atmospheric oxygen present in the sealed anaerobic pot and simultaneously evolves carbon dioxide. This new product differs from conventional gas generators in that no hydrogen is released during the chemical reaction, so no catalyst is needed. Furthermore, the addition of water is not necessary.
AnaeroGen reduces the atmospheric oxygen content in a closed anaerobic digester to below 1% within 30 minutes. The carbon dioxide content is then between 9–13%, and the pressure usually drops to about -0.2 bar. Each AnaeroGen paper bag is individually wrapped in foil. The reaction starts as soon as the AnaeroGen paper bag is exposed to air. Therefore, it is absolutely necessary to remove the paper bag immediately after opening the outer foil, place it in the anaerobic digester and close the lid. This process should not take longer than one minute. The reaction of ascorbic acid with oxygen is exothermic, and the temperature of the AnaeroGen paper bag should not exceed 60°C.
Application
Quality control In the laboratory, the anaerobic system used should be checked at certain intervals to see whether the appropriate
atmospheric conditions are achieved for the respective microorganisms. Recommended control strains are:
Storage and Shelf Life
Additional notes The AnaeroGen- paper bag heats up as soon as it is exposed to air. Opening the foil, inserting and closing the anaerobic cup should not take longer than one minute. If the bag is exposed to air for longer than about one minute, reactivity will decrease and anaerobic conditions may not be achieved. The AnaeroGen paper bags may still be slightly reactive after removal from the anaerobic digester and should be allowed to cool to room temperature before disposal.
