Dip slides were originally developed to determine the bacterial content of urine samples. They have been modified over the years into the double-sided form, with medium for gram-positive species on one side and medium for gram-negative species on the other. Colony counting is time and cost efficient with these dip slides, allowing samples to be in contact with two different media at the same time.
