The cyano-based 1301 columns are general purpose GC columns well suited for the analysis of solvents over a wide range of volatility. The cyano stationary phase provides better retention of polar compounds than a Type 5 column; however, cyano-based stationary phases tend to have high column bleed and are not very robust, which limits their usefulness. The Restek Rxi-1301Sil MS column is a silarylene-based stationary phase that not only provides the selectivity required for the analysis of less volatile compounds, but also significantly reduces column bleed and improves robustness.
The low maximum operating temperature characteristic of non-silarylene cyano phases is a known disadvantage of using conventional 1301 columns for volatile analysis. Due to their high column bleed and low maximum temperatures, many 1301 columns are not suitable for MS analysis. In contrast, the robust Rxi-1301Sil MS column is ideal for MS applications as it offers the highest maximum temperature and lowest column bleed in the industry, resulting in much more reliable and accurate MS results. Exceptionally high thermal stability ensures robust column performance and enables more aggressive thermal heating rates to avoid carryover of high molecular weight compounds between analyses (i.e., longer run time).
The Rxi-1301Sil MS column not only offers true 1301 selectivity and the industry's lowest column bleed and maximum temperature limits, but also a high level of inertness. Each Rxi-1301Sil MS column is tested with a QC mix containing both acidic and basic materials to ensure inertness across multiple compound classes. The increased inertness of the column improves peak shape and response, ensuring more accurate quantitative results.
