In reversed-phase mode, cyano columns are the most polar and least retentive of all reversed-phase packings. Extremely hydrophobic compounds which do not elute in standard C18 and C8 packings can be retained using typical reversed-phase eluents. In addition, the unique nitrile chemistry provides different selectivity from both phenyl and standard aliphatic (C18, C8, and C4) reversed-phase packings. Large pore-size 300Å packing materials are also available for the analysis of biomolecules in order to utilize this unique selectivity.
In normal-phase mode, cyano is a bonded phase that can be used as an alternative to silica. Bonded normal-phase columns have the advantage of faster equilibration and more uniform surface activity compared to bare silica gel.
To extend column lifetime, continued switching back and forth between normal- and reversed-phase solvents should be avoided.
Useful in Both Normal-Phase and Reversed-Phase Modes
YMC-Pack CN can be used for both normal-phase and reversed-phase analyses due to the medium polarity of the cyanopropyl phase bonded to the silica base particle. It can be used in normal-phase with low-polarity mobile phases such as hexane, or in reversed-phase with highly-polar mobile phases such as methanol and water. YMC-Pack CN can be useful for shortening analysis time in situations where retention is substantial using C18 or C8, or when separation optimization is difficult.
