Expression of the enzyme phospholipase C, produced by L. monocytogenes and Listeria ivanovii, creates a distinct opaque white halo around the L. monocolony as a diagnostic criterion for differentiating non-pathogenic Listeria spp. from pathogenic Listeria spp.
